As I stood at the start line of Mile End parkrun, my fifth time attending this event, a wonderful book I recently finished by Sahil Bloom titled The 5 Types of Wealth came to mind.
As today's 468 participants headed off I reflected back on how this insightful book offers a refreshing perspective on the journey of life, reminding us that while it's easy to focus on accumulating financial wealth, there are four other equally important areas we shouldn't overlook: Time Wealth, Social Wealth, Mental Wealth, and Physical Wealth and that parkrun might be a secret key to unlock some of these.

One of the most powerful concepts in the book is the idea of the Time Billionaire, introduced by Graham Duncan. He notes that 31 years equals over a billion seconds, meaning that someone in their 20s holds a wealth of time that even the most financially affluent—like Warren Buffet at age 94—no longer possess. As we age, Financial Wealth has its limits, but investing in Social Wealth, Mental Health and Physical Wealth can yield lasting rewards.
This thought was particularly poignant as I reflected on my aunt who is bravely facing the challenges of dementia. Despite her struggles, the immense Social Wealth she created throughout her life shines brightly, as she receives an outpouring of love and support from family and friends. It was one of the highlights of 2024 going to see her and introducing our daughter to her.

Attending parkrun has been a wonderful way for me to cultivate my own Social Wealth. Long before crossing the finish line the marshalls on the course brought a warmth to what was otherwise a very cold morning. After crossing the finish line we headed to Alice’s for a brunch filled with laughter and warmth—a friendship made at parkrun that has blossomed beyond our Saturday morning runs. Thanks to parkrun, I’ve formed unexpected and meaningful connections that have led to invitations to weddings, birthday celebrations, and wonderful gatherings. It’s truly been the remedy for social isolation and loneliness.

Of course, parkrun has also played a vital role in enhancing my Physical Wealth. Sahil encourages readers to focus not just on fitness, but also on nutrition. I’ve been drawing inspiration and guidance from Renee McGregor, an expert dietitian who supports both elite athletes and everyday individuals. Her book, More Fuel You, is a fantastic read filled with realistic, science-backed nutritional advice an antidote to eating/health trends which might not be good for you.

Through effective stretching, strength training, and mindful eating, I’ve been amazed at how I’ve reversed my health trajectory—I'm fitter and faster than I was when I first started parkrun 12 years ago!
Sahil also emphasizes the importance of Mental Wealth, which he defines through the pillars of purpose, growth, and space. My goals of joining the 500 Club and Freyne Club give me a sense of purpose and excitement.
In conclusion, Sahil’s focus on balancing all forms of wealth beautifully illustrates the myriad benefits of participating in parkrun. His book is rich with engaging insights and captivating stories and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The book could finish with ‘attend parkrun regularly to build your Wealthy life’.
Stay well, stay safe, and keep running!
